Recently, with the frequent invasion of cold waves, weather conditions have become more and more unpredictable, and it is more common for temperatures to plummet from the mids to around 0°C. The sharp fluctuations in temperature greatly underline the importance of careful maintenance and maintenance of the unit during the winter months. Therefore, it is wise and necessary to prepare well before the cold weather arrives.

Although the generator set is "steel and iron bones", however, in the face of too low temperature environment, its internal parts may be adversely affected, thereby reducing the service life of the unit. Therefore, in order to ensure the long-term and stable operation of diesel generator sets, we should properly place them in a dry and warm environment to avoid potential damage to components caused by long-term exposure to low temperature conditions, so as to ensure the optimization of equipment performance and life.
 The unit relies on compressed air inside the cylinders to reach high temperatures, which ignites the diesel fuel injected into it. As a result, the thickening and solidification of diesel, the low temperature of the cylinder wall, and the attenuation of the battery output power at low temperatures can significantly increase the difficulty of starting.
Before starting in cold weather, it is important to preheat the diesel engine with a preheater or manual preheating equipment to reduce the difficulty of starting and provide the necessary protection for the engine. For low-power units, the use of glow plugs and intake heaters is also worth considering.
After successful start-up, the generator set should be allowed to run smoothly under low load for a period of time to ensure that it is fully preheated to reduce the thermal stress of components caused by excessive temperature difference.
Use diesel fuel suitable for low temperature environment to avoid oil circuit blockage caused by using diesel fuel with too low grade;
The fuel tank/tank should be placed in a temperature adjustable area to avoid condensation, thickening, and solidification;
Regularly inspect the oil circuit system to ensure that there is no freezing or blockage, and keep the oil circuit unblocked;
The fuel filter/water separator is the most common place for fuel condensation, don't forget to drain the water in the fuel filter/water separator when winter comes, and avoid freezing as much as possible;
Have a spare fuel filter/water separator on hand if necessary to replace the fuel filter/water separator that is being frozen.
When the temperature decreases, the viscosity of the lubricating oil increases, the fluidity becomes poor, and the friction increases, which can make it difficult to start the unit. Therefore, the appropriate lubricating oil should be selected according to the local climatic conditions to ensure that the engine is well lubricated. For example, in northern China and alpine regions, it would be wise to choose a lower temperature oil with better performance such as 10W-30 or 5W-40.
 The glycol in the coolant prevents boiling and also lowers the cooling temperature of the coolant. Therefore, it is important to check the antifreeze in the cooling system to ensure that it is at the right concentration to prevent the cooling system from freezing.
Cold weather can have an impact on the battery, and old batteries are prone to rapid power loss at low temperatures, especially after experiencing corrosion and evaporation problems caused by high temperatures in summer, cold weather may further weaken battery performance or even cause it to fail. Therefore, it is important to check the charging status of the battery regularly, and if necessary, replace the battery in time or take heating and insulation measures to avoid the embarrassing situation of running out of power when it is time to start.
